I’m really excited to be part of a great new collaboration with Owen and the team at United by Design who are based just round the corner from me in York. The collaboration was started to meet the creative needs of breweries, independent food and drink producers and other makers. It’s all about top end design and branding work matched with documentary and lifestyle photography that will really help the independents make their mark.
My first photo story for the collaboration covered the wonderful world of Treboom Brewery. Treboom is a microbrewery located in Shipton-by-Beningbrough on the outskirts of York. They make some amazing beer using water from their own bore hole and by introducing interesting flavours through the use of herbs such as bog myrtle harvested from the North York Moors. They even have a reed bed drainage system and solar panels a plenty so it’s a pretty eco friendly enterprise.
I spent a morning with owners John & Jane documenting them hard at work on their latest brew – First Draft – which is a Houblon Nouveau. They had bought in some amazing green hops for the occasion and the smell in the building was fantastic. In fact I can still smell it looking at the still life shot of the green hops. Rather brilliantly, John & Jane are growing their own green hops so it’ll be great to see those incorporated into a future brew. It was a fantastic commission to work on documenting the different processes alongside a sense of detail of both the environment and ingredients.
Treboom will be attending the York CAMRA Beer & Cider Festival on the Knavesmire 18th – 21st September and will be showcasing the new bottles which is really exciting. Definitely worth a visit…
We’d love to hear from any breweries or independent food producers or makers that feel they need a creative injection – we’re always happy to have a chat over a coffee (or ale!) to discuss how we might be able to help. We also hang out on twitter so do pop by to say hi – @owen_ubd / @ubd_studio / @oliviabrabbs

Absolutely brilliant pictures. John & Jane are really lovely people pursuing a dream and coming from different backgrounds. You chose a good day to get that external shot of the building. I work in one of the office units on the first floor behind the brewery part of the building so I can enjoy the brewing smells almost every day!
The rural location with Martin’s hens strolling around is very peaceful and Tom the Maine Coon cat puts in the occasional appearance as well.
Thanks Alan. I loved documenting John and Jane at work – they are so passionate about their trade.
