Heritage photographer – Ryedale Folk Museum

The Client: One of my core areas of work as a heritage photographer is supporting museums with their marketing imagery.  Ryedale Folk Museum is based in the beautiful village of Hutton Le Hole in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.  It is such a unique place with featuring over 20 perfectly preserved heritage buildings.  It really is like stepping back in time.  Many exhibits focus on the history of life in the North York Moors spanning over 4000 years.  There are also fascinating stories around witchcraft and local folklore.  The museum is also home to animals including rarebreed sheep and pigs.

The brief:  The commission covered two separate days of photography to cover environment and artefacts and  also visitor experience.  There was also a Living History element to the brief working with the volunteers and the costume department.

Many of the heritage buildings feature very low light conditions which adds to the atmosphere for the visitor and of course authenticity of the time.  I worked carefully in these situations with a tripod to allow longer exposures to bring out the best of the ambient light.

My aim for the visitor experience photography was to keep things looking very natural.  A documentary approach is perfect for this and so I shadowed visitors and volunteers interacting with and enjoying the different locations and artefacts.

Client testimonial:

I was delighted to receive these kind words on completion of the commission.

“Olivia is exceedingly professional and thorough which meant that our shoots were planned carefully in advance and nothing was missed.  She ensured that our venue was showcased most effectively through a range of high-quality, evocative images, including inside our wide variety of historic buildings and across the wider open-air site.  Olivia’s photography of historic objects and artefacts was perfect for our needs, including a selection of angles and close.  She also developed rapport with our visitors to capture their experience with us.  I cannot recommend Olivia highly enough.”
