Manufacturing Photography for Will’s Marquees

I always know a commission is going to be totally up my street when the photography brief includes the phrases; handcrafted, made in Britain and artisan.  I know the team well at Will’s Marquees through my wedding photography so it was great to be asked to work for them in a commercial capacity.  The company stand out in the marquee hire industry for their amazing personal service but also because they manufacture their own traditional canvas pole tents.  To date Will’s have been making tents for their own use but are going to be launching an exciting new side to their business.  This new business will focus on their manufacturing services which will enable individuals and businesses to order custom made marquees.  The photography was commissioned to support the launch of this new business and related branding needs.  Images will be used to illustrate a new website and to support marketing and social media campaigns.

The shoot was undertaken at the manufacturing premises in Tockwith near York.  The space was fresh and clean with the option to flood the studio with natural light thanks to the floor to ceiling industrial doors.  My documentary photography style is perfectly suited to this style of shoot.  Processes and details were captured naturally as the team got on with production roles.  I always love getting close into the details of work and hands play an important part as they demonstrate expertise and process.  In essence, a shoot like this is about telling the story behind the product.

We also set up some flat lay images to show some of the kit associated with the tents.  I always get a little bit geeky about industrial unit floors as they often offer amazing backdrops for images.  The worn red concrete floor available worked really well.  We finished the shoot capturing some of the woodwork tasks as Will’s also build their own bars for the marquees.

Further images were taken for Will’s Marquees on another date on their open day at Jervaulx Abbey.  This gave the opportunity to capture marquee details and craftsmanship on an erected tent.  Gorgeous blue skies offered an amazing backdrop.  You can view some of the images through a previous blog post – WILL’S MARQUEES WEDDING OPEN DAY AT JERVAULX ABBEY
