FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOT
Meiji Designs create stunning hand crafted silk scarves and kimonos that are influenced by Japanese design and traditional hand dyeing techniques. Their approach to creation is a stand against the fast fashion culture and means that each of their products are unique. The pieces are so beautiful and each one has so much depth of colour and texture.
I first met Natalie and Ruth from Meiji Designs at an event during York Fashion Week 2017 which is run by Fashion City York. This event was a fashion takeover at the Lotte Inch Gallery in York and was a stunning showcase of their unique pieces. Following on from this work I was thrilled to be commissioned by Meiji to undertake a fashion photography shoot. The brief was to photograph the pieces in natural light to keep the tones and colours really authentic.
We chose boutique hotel Grays Court for our shoot location. It’s my favourite York hotel and fitted perfectly with the brief of the shoot with the variety of outdoor backdrops available and sense of heritage. It was important to Meiji that the pieces were not photographed with too much light to ensure a soft and authentic feel so we chose to shoot in the evening light. The good old British Weather decided to provide some challenges with dark skies and the constant threat of rain. We pulled it off though and Sophie our beautiful model was an absolute star.
Here are some favourites from the shoot:
I’m really looking forward to working again with Meiji Designs on a follow up shoot which will be a behind the scenes of their creative processes. I always adore working with makers and producers and love the opportunity to tell the story behind a product. You can see some work undertaken for other creatives and producers on my website.
