The Client:
One of the biggest perks of being a restaurant photographer is the privilege of visiting some stunning locations. The Fish Cottage is nestled just off the beautiful beach at Sandsend near Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast. From Sandsend there are amazing views to enjoy across the beach towards Whitby and it’s iconic pier and Abbey. On the day of the shoot the conditions started with atmospheric mist breaking out later on into sunshine.
The Fish Cottage caters perfectly for different needs with a gorgeous restaurant packed with seaside decor references and then the additional option of takeaway. Take away food can be enjoyed on the nearby beach or on the lovely terrace which is a real suntrap in the Summer.
Photography approach:
After photography of the restaurant interior and design details the main focus on the shoot was on the food. I opted to use the beautiful terrace to bring a lovely Summery look to the images. I photographed several favourite menu items alongside some desserts and cocktails. The take away menu really takes things to the next level offering classic fish and chips alongside lobster and prawn tacos.
My set up was really simple making the most of the ambient sunlight which I carefully diffused to soften everything. My position was chosen to take advantage of back lighting from the sun for creative effect.
In between dishes I also took the opportunity to document the team at work in the kitchens. It’s always great to be able to share stories from behind the scenes.
The final part of the shoot was taking some of the take away dishes down onto Sandsend beach to really bring the seaside into the narrative of the images.
Images have been used across the Fish Cottage website and social media platforms as well as for editorial features.
I’ve picked out some favourites from the shoot below – enjoy!
